The hotels history
Maritim Hotel is Tønsbergs oldest hotel. The original building was constructed in 1910 and was called Tønsberg sailors' home. As the name implies, the building was used by sailors. "Tønsbergs sailors assosiation" bought the property in 1923 from funds raised, and drove the sailor home. In 1949, the building burned down. The building you see today was finished built in 1955. Gradually there was no need for a sailors' home, and in the 1970s, the property was converted into a hotel. "Tønsbergs sailors assosiation" was the owner for many years, and rented the hotel to several different people. Having rented the hotel for many years, todays owner purchased the property in 2006. After this, the hotel has been refurbished and modernized.
The building was previously the house of both an accountant in the 2 floor, a bowling alley in the basement and flower shop in the 1. floor. Today these rooms has been transformed into the frontdesk and a variety of family rooms.
In December 2009 the hotel went from using old oil-fired heating stoves from 1955 to connect to the new district heating plant in Tønsberg. Maritim Hotel was the first building in the town who connected to the new heating system in Tønsberg. In January 2010 a brand new elevator from Otis was ready for guests to use at the main entrance at the reception.
